Brookings Board of Education Receives ALL Award!
Congratulations to the Brookings Board of Education on earning the ALL Award from the Associated School Boards of South Dakota (ASBSD) for the 2025-2026 school year! This recognition highlights the Board's commitment to professional development and ongoing training to better serve our students, staff, and community.

Six Brookings High School JAG (Jobs for America's Graduates) students attended the Emerging Leaders Summit in Rapid City on October 7–8!
Students connected with peers from 16 South Dakota schools, participated in leadership breakout sessions, and gained valuable skills and ideas to bring back to the BHS JAG program. We're proud of these students for representing BHS!

For our October Hometown Legacy feature, we're highlighting two more BSD staff members who graduated Brookings High School and have returned to work in the district!
Courtney Honkomp, BHS Class of 2018, is an Instructional Assistant at Mickelson Middle School.
Jennifer Lacher-Starace, BHS Class of 1992, is an 8th Grade Reading Teacher at Mickelson Middle School.
From favorite school memories and influential educators to working alongside former teachers and inspiring today's students, Courtney and Jen share what makes returning to their alma mater so meaningful.

Emly was one of three winners selected from the Teen division, earning a $200 scholarship and the opportunity to advance to the Miss South Dakota’s Teen 2027 competition, June 3–5 at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center in Brookings.
During her year of service, Emly will promote her Community Service Initiative, “Blur the Lines,” which encourages young people to connect through their differences by embracing diversity of thought, appearance, and culture.

National School Custodian Appreciation Day
Today, we recognize the 25 dedicated custodial staff members who care for our schools across the Brookings School District!

This month, we're highlighting two Brookings High School graduates who have returned to BSD to help make a difference for the next generation.
Lynsey Magnus, BHS Class of 2009, serves as an Instructional Assistant at Dakota Prairie Elementary and Assistant Girls' Soccer Coach.
Zach Thomas, BHS Class of 2010, serves as Principal at Brookings High School.
Both share a special connection to the district they grew up in and the educators who helped shape their experiences. Now, they're continuing that legacy as members of the BSD team.

Congratulations to Brookings High School freshman Madison Ballis, recipient of the September B.E.S.T. Award!
Madi represented South Dakota FCCLA at the National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., where her Sports Nutrition project earned second place in the nation!
