Brookings School District is proud to highlight the incredible journey of BHS alumna Hiltje Peitz (Landman), Class of 2010. From her days as a drum major in the Bobcat marching band to becoming an award-winning music educator, Hiltje's passion for music and leadership has shaped her career.

After graduating from BHS, Hiltje pursued a Bachelors of Music Education at South Dakota State University and later earned her Master of Music Education from Northern State University. Her dedication to teaching led her to positions as a Band Director for grades 5-8 at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools in Sioux City, Iowa, and currently as a 7-8 Band Director at Liberty Middle School in Papillion, Nebraska.

Her excellence in music education has been recognized with multiple prestigious awards, including the Barry Manilow Music Teacher Award (2024), the PLCS Superintendent Gratitude Award (2024), the Fase Family Fund for Teacher Excellence Award (2023), and the NSBA Jack Snider Young Band Director Award (2020). She also led her students to perform at the 2024 NSBA Convention, showcasing their talent on a larger stage.

Reflecting on her time at BHS, Hiltje recalls how being a drum major for the marching band and pep band was a defining experience. "I loved all things band, and being a student leader in this role was such an amazing experience!" she shares.

Her advice for current BHS students? "Try lots of things now! If you can figure out if you like them now, it will help you make more educated (and better!) choices later on in life."

We are proud to celebrate Hiltje's accomplishments and the impact she continues to make in music education.
